Martin Ford is a futurist and the author of two books: The New York Times Bestselling Rise of the Robots: Technology and the Threat of a Jobless Future (winner of the 2015 Financial Times/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award and translated into more than 20 languages) and The Lights in the Tunnel: Automation, Accelerating Technology and the Economy of the Future, as well as the founder of a Silicon Valley-based software development firm. His TED Talk on the impact of AI and robotics on the economy and society, given on the main stage at the 2017 TED Conference, has been viewed more than 2 million times. Martin is also the consulting artificial intelligence expert for the new "Rise of the Robots Index" from Societe Generale, underlying the Lyxor Robotics & AI ETF, which is focused specifically on investing in companies that will be significant participants in the AI and robotics revolution. He holds a computer engineering degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a graduate business degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has written about future technology and its implications for publications including The New York Times, Fortune, Forbes, The Atlantic, The Washington Post, Harvard Business Review, The Guardian, and The Financial Times. He has also appeared on numerous radio and television shows, including NPR, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC and PBS. Very diverse (at least in terms of opinions) cast of interviewees. Almost all the big names of the field are present. A very insightful (and non-technical) read of the state of all things AI and it’s future.

In his new book, Architects of Intelligence: The Truth About AI from the People Building It, Martin Ford interviews 23 of the most experienced AI and robotics researchers in the world, asking them about the current state of AI, how AI can be applied to solve real-life problems and what that means for the future of robotics and computing.The book is divided into 23 chapters. Each chapter is a separate interview of one of the 23 researchers which I find is a good way to present the unique thoughts and opinions of these people. My favorite interview is the one with Demis Hassabis, the founder and the brain behind Google's DeepMind, the company that achieved to build an AI that can beat the world's best human player in the game Go.Each interviewee is basically asked the same questions about the current state of AI, the potential of AI, artificial general intelligence, danger of AI etc. It is interesting to see the different opinions and thoughts. For example some researchers believe that we are only 20 years apart from achieving artificial general intelligence, while others speculate that it will take us hundreds of years to get there.The book never gets too technical. So if you never heard of AI before it is a great introduction to this field and you can easily read along. The writer provides very good explanations of the basic technical topics in AI, like "supervised learning", "neural networks", "autoencoders" etc.If you have experience with AI, the book would give you a new perspective on AI, its possibilities and dangers.In summary: The book is worth reading. You’re hearing about artificial intelligence from the people who know the most about artificial intelligence. These people are developing it, continuing to advance it, and are applying it to real problems.
